With Erik, I just sat him on his potty in front of the TV and he would eventually pee in it. Not pretty, but it worked. Sounds like your guy is much more stubborn, though. I didn't even think about teaching him to pee standing up until he came up with the idea himself. I still rue the day.

Absolutely wishing you well. We experienced a monstrous hail storm 6 years ago, 4 weeks before my son was to be married in our backyard. It was the second weekend of spring break, and I had just spent the whole week putting out over $300.00 worth of bedding plants so as to have beautiful flowers at the wedding. The hail was the size of large tangerines and lasted for 30 minutes! It stripped every new leaf off of every tree, and pounded all the flowers into the ground. I videotaped the storm. My dad said I should send the tape to the local TV station for airing on the news, but I couldn't because of all the swearing. Yep, I don't remember using that much profanity in a 30 minute period at any other time in my life. We got a new roof out of it at least...

Potty training. Oy vey. So not fun, and I will shamelessly say that Drew's daycare took the brunt of it, as it is a 'true' daycare (not mother's day out) where they are there full-time, thus the teachers take it upon themselves to help the kids learn. God bless them is all I have to say.

Cheerios were of no use. Candy and hot wheels worked SOOO much better. One m&m for pee, which soon became 2 (one for each hand) and 5 for poop (which is a WHOLE other thing, as you know). We would also instantly be off to Target as a reward for him to pick out his own hot wheels car. Best $0.97 I ever laid out.

I was introduced to your blog by my daughter-in-law, who has you on her blog roll. I've been following since summer 2007. I was a third grade teacher for 12 years and can sooo relate to your teacher stories. They have given me some good laughs over the years! I am a school librarian now, but my job is being eliminated next school year (because, as we all know, librarians have NOTHING to do with education!) I reared 3 sons, and really enjoy your "mother of boys" tales. Ah, yes, those stories take me back... I began blogging in 2007 myself, but haven't been very faithful. What I really want to write about is education, but I haven't felt free to say much while still employed, lest a coworker come upon my comments. I started reading a year or two before you quit teaching. I found you through KauaiMark that used to post on proteacher.com. I forget about your blog for awhile wnntil I see it in my bookmarks. Then, I proceed to spend hours reading through to catch up -- which is so often the case when I'm procrastinating. You have the best sense of writing and comic timing, which is why I enjoy it so much. It's a gift to take something boring and make it delightful to read about.

I relate to your frugalness and also feel envious that I dont' have "the gift" to save as much, albeit that I'm every bit as frugal as you. I have started using retailmenot and Swagbucks, thanks to you. Every time I see the previews for the new show about couponing coming to TLC, I think of you. I found you through your friend Aims. I don't remember when I started reading -- too many children and not enough brain cells I'm afraid. I know it was somewhere around the "blue balls" at Target story. I laughed til I cried. I'm a teacher who now wrangles my own brood instead of everyone else's and the XY chromsomes outnumber us XX's 2:1 in my house. I love your stories and I love that my kids aren't the only ones who are "like that." Oh and I wish I could coupon half as well as you.
